Business Meeting Notes –April 3 , 2005
1) Maximus is now an authorized Youth Marshal. As garage sale season is
upon is, he has requested that people keep an eye out for items that
could be used for youth fighting. This included lacrosse helmets, knee
and elbows (such as hockey).
2) We are in need of an Autocrat for Bards and Bows. Our previous
autocrat was forced to step out due to mundane concerns. This could be
a great first event to autocrat as the 2 hardest things (finding a site,
and finding a cook) are already taken care of!
Seneschal’s Ramblings

Greetings everyone!
As spring has arrived, so to has outdoor events season! Our knight
marshal has begun to speak of moving fight practice out of doors, as
well as re-starting Sunday practices. I am sure he will keep us
informed of updated information as decisions are made.
If anyone has any ideas for demos or for ways to spread knowledge of our
existence please speak up!
That’s all I have for now.
In service,
Eoghan Rurikson
From the A&S Officer:
Please send all requests for classes to me ASAP, as well as all
volunteers to teach, and volunteers to host.
Let me know what A&S activities everyone is involved with.
Anne
Axes and Ales

7) other.
The chef for the day has been making plans, a menu should be out soon,
as well as the possibility of a tasting for an A and S meeting!
Feel free to volunteer as often as you like!
Pennsic Reminder
Please remember to preregister for Pennsic.
If you are camping with us, you will need to put “Shires of Barren Sands
and Sterlynge Vayle” in the Group camping with slot but you must contact
the Land Agent for our group (me) at keran@hancock for permission to
camp before sending it in. The deadline approaches.
I will also need the tent sizes a little earlier this year as I'm not
doing the Land Grab. Your on site person is Robert O'Connor, Sterlynge
Vayle's Herald.
Faithfully submitted by Keran Roslin
Long live the King and Queen
Vivats to our new king and Queen, Malcolm and Tessa!
May 28 - Newcomers Picnic
Please set this day aside for a picnic in the park demo. Plans are being
made to bring a dish to pass, have a display and some fighting as well.

Announcing the Pennsic 34
SCROLLS FOR KINGDOMS PROJECT
Greetings unto all from Aleyd von Kiel and the Sylvan Signet Office:
War approaches, and our future King and Queen have called upon the
talented and prolific scribes of Æthelmearc to help them. Prince
Malcolm and Princess Tessa have specifically requested scroll blanks to
include in the gift baskets they distribute at War this year.
This is a great opportunity for scribes of all levels of ability. If
you do a scroll for the gift baskets, please include your contact
information. Some scribes, who provided scrolls for gift baskets in the
past, have received thank-you’s from recipients in distant kingdoms. :-]
It is a fine thing not only to share you talents and enhance
Æthelmearc’s already outstanding reputation for generosity and scribal
skill, but to allow fellow Scadians an opportunity to demonstrate their
courtesy.
To further encourage one and all to participate, prizes will be given
for the following:
- Most scroll blanks donated
- Second most scroll blanks donated
- Best heraldic display on a scroll
- Most senior scribe to complete a scroll for the project (based on
number of years producing scrolls, not age!)
- Newest scribe to complete a scroll for the project
Winners will be announced at the Pennsic Scribal Tea Party.
Deadline:
July 4th, 2005
Are you required to do this?
No, however our future King and Queen are not only highly
supportive of us, they are also scribes. They are working hard to help
us as much as possible while they are on the throne, and highly
commendably if we in turn helped them with this project.
To whom do you give the scroll blanks?
Aleyd von Kiel (mka Cheryl Ronolder), Coordinator for the Scrolls
for Kingdoms Project. Email clhbearlover (at) yahoo (dot) com or call
716-372-6055 to coordinate delivery. (If I’m not going to be at an
event, there might be someone that can deliver it to me.)
You can also mail them to this address:
Cheryl Ronolder;
208 North 4th Street;
Olean, NY 14760
What style:
No restrictions. (A website is being made to list what each
kingdom has in its restrictions)
What size:
Don't make them so huge that we can't put them into a gift basket
(16" x 20" is probably too big).
What level:
Any thing you want- Please do not mark them as being for X level,
as different kingdoms have different standards.
How many:
As many as you want to make. You can work on them with friends or
on your own.
Do I have to make scrolls with the various Kingdom arms?
No, but if you decide to, please contact me so I can keep track of
who is working on what. We don’t want to end up with 100 scrolls with
Ansetorra’s arms andnone for any of the other Kingdoms.
What are the Kingdoms?
This website has a list of the SCA Kingdoms. If you cannot access
the website, feel free to contact me and I can send you more details.
http://heraldry.griffin-dor.org/groups/index.htm
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact myself or the
Sylvan Signet THL Una de Saint Luc.
Sincerely,
Aleyd von Kiel

Seneschal’s Ramblings
Good Day everyone! This is an interesting time for the Shire, with Marriages taking place left and right, and new babies coming along! Congrats to everyone who fits one, the other, or both! More close to home, the current count of members is 27 Card Carrying and 11 non Card-Carrying. We have an upcoming Demo on July 10th and several events that are within an hour or so. What a great month to be a SCAdian! On a more serious note, I want to thank everyone for all of the work that went into Axes and Ales, I heard nothing but good things about it. The only complaint that I heard was related to some children that had been running around. To counter any problems in the future, we will be adding a line to all of our event announcements along the following lines:
“Any children found unsupervised will be asked to leave, along with their parents, at the discretion of the Autocrat(s) or the Seneschal.”
Exact wording will be discussed at an upcoming business meeting. For this rambling, that’s all! Everyone keep up the good work!
In Service to the Shire of Sterlynge Vayle, and the Kingdom of Aethelmearc,

INDOOR Fight practice Thursday nights
Starting at 6pm, and going until 8:30 or 9ish (or until we are tired) fight practice will be going on at the court street Salvation Army in Binghamton. This is a weekly arrangement, and will continue at least until warmer weather. If we would like, we may be able to keep using the location in the summer, which would allow us to have fight practice in inclement weather. We will have half of a gym to use, with 20' ceilings, so poll arms and great swords are welcome. If anyone has any questions or would like directions, please contact me at eoghan@clandiarmat.com.

Demo at State Park
On July 10th there will be a demo at Chenango Valley State park. There will be heavy fighting, and an Arts and Sciences Display. They would like us there from 12 – 6, and we can show up earlier to set up. The park has said that if we get them a list of names of people who will be there, then those people will not have to pay the entrance fee. If everything goes well, then they would like us to try and do one in September or October. If that goes as well, then they would like to do one next year where they do a pig roast to coincide with it. We also discussed the possibility of using the location for a regional fight practice that is open for the public to watch.

Any donations are appreciated, please contact eoghan@clandiarmat.com for more information.

A&A thanks
Thank you all for your help in making Ales VI such a huge success again this year. I don't think any one person was overwhelmed with stuff to do, because everyone pulled a fair share of weight.
I heard nothing but compliments, and the few things that could have been completely disastrous were smoothed over well. I heard over and over that this year was better than last year's. And the two laurels with whom I had dinner agreed that the chef deserved his Sycamore.
I don't think many people noticed that there were no Axes... this does disappoint me on some level because that was a major point of having the event- but when most of the TW community is going to Blackstone or elsewhere, it's tough to have something new and exciting and lots of enthusiastic participation for it! And I do know how hard Vlat tried to make it happen.
The other minor trouble of the young man who drove his mother-in-law's van along a telephone pole was brushed off by Brian. Even the mother-in-law didn't mind horrifically.
Brian was greatly impressed by the cleanup we did. He always loves it when he has us because we do leave it cleaner than we find it.The only lost & found that I know of was a small silver earring found. Everything else was adopted, to the best of my knowledge.
I think a good time was had by all. :) Thank you everyone. Without you, it would have been impossible.
-George Anne

Seneschal’s Ramblings
Good day to everyone! Ahead of us we have a busy couple of months. Axes and Ales is right around the corner, have you let Lady Georg know that you would like to help her out yet? Help can always be used at troll, in the kitchen, and just about anywhere else that you can think of!
In the next business meeting there are several things that I plan to bring up, with the intent to change our policy.
1) I would like to require any one planning to run for office to mention it by the business meeting before the elections. The nominees would then be mentioned in the next news letter, so that the populace is aware of the people running. This would enable anyone having to cast a proxy to know who is running. As there are offices that people decide at the last minute to run for (Because no one else has), I thought to include an exception of when 1 or less persons have decided to run.
2) I would also like to add an additional part to our elections policy. At the request of any Shire Member, elections can be held via secret ballot. It is preferred that this request be made before the business meeting the election is taking place. We do not currently have a good and accurate listing of our Shire Members. If you have not already done so, I would like to request that you forward me your (and any participants in your household) Name, SCAdian Name, Membership Number, Expiration Date, Phone Number and email address. Also please include whether you would like to be on a phone tree for the shire. If you are not an active card-carrying member, please forward your information to me. You are a valued part of our shire and we would like to count you as such.
That is all I have for now.

I would like to thank both Lord Malcolm and Mad Lord Vlat on behalf of the shire for the time that they have spent as officers. Mad Lord Vlat has been our Knight Marshal for quite a while (with a one-shift vacation).A very heart felt Vivat! and Spoon! to all of those who have been elected, and a heart felt thank you for those who have stepped down into a much-deserved break from office!

Carpooling
There are often Events going on in the local area (see event listing in this news letter). Often people travel there alone, or with a seat or two empty in their car. Why not post your decision to go? Perhaps there is a shire member that would have loved to have gone, but doesn’t wish to drive. If you don’t have a ride, but would like to go, why not post a question to the list to see if anyone has room? This could lead to a savings in gas cost for both of you, as well as giving you company for the trip!
Do include medical concerns you may have- such as an allergy to perfume- so that these may be considered when offering or accepting a ride.

Axes & Ales VI
As the earth warms up once more, come to Axes & Ales VI, hosted by the Shire of Sterlynge Vayle. We are returning once again to Camp Sertoma, Johnson Road (no number listed), Kirkwood, NY, now that they have finished yet more construction at the site. This year, there's an actual designated sleeping cabin with bed space and heating!
The gates will open at 6 pm on April 23, and anyone staying after noon on April 25, 2004, will be assumed to be helping with the clean-up. The site is discretely Damp (period containers please, and you must remove all empties from site). Open flames are permitted at Feast. Please be aware that while handicapped accessibility is improving at the site, there are still a great many hills.
Saturday promises a full schedule with something for everyone. The Traditional Axes and Ales Tourney will be run by our own Mad Lord Vlat Kohout. He has promised a challenge worthy of his nickname. We will also have the return of the informal brewing competition again this year run by Lady George Anne- please bring anything you wish to enter, and even if you do not compete, you may always volunteer to be a judge. If you wish to teach an alcohol-related class or judge, please contact the autocrat.
We will have heavy weapons martial activities organized by Rundewulfe. He promises to have interesting and exciting combat without frills. This year, we will be offering archery, run by Mariana of the Vayle. She promises to have a challenging shoot and Royal Rounds.Merchants are welcome and encouraged. You must provide your own tables and shelter as the Hall is too small to accommodate.
The feast, limited to 80 gentles, will be cooked by Jim Neidhardt, with the assistance of Sir Murdoch Bayne. This will be Jim's first feast, but since he's mundanely a professional chef, we're sure he'll be fine.Following dinner, those still standing may take what pleasure they may in dance, revels, songs and assorted frivolity as the Soggy Dragons’ host their infamous Mead Slam. Yes, all brewers (and drinkers) will gather, pass a bottle, and share comments on it. If the brewing competition is too intimidating, here is a great place to go for more constructive ideas. Proof of age is REQUIRED.
Send reservations, food allergy/inquiries, and all other questions to the Autocrat: Lady George Anne (Georg-Karen Hawks), thegeorg@stny.rr.com. No calls after 9:30 pm, please.
Cost: Onboard: $13.00 (includes Breakfast Saturday and Sunday, Lunch Saturday, and Feast); OffBoard: $7.00. Minors aged 17 to 13 are $1 off full price. Children 6 to 12 are half price, and those under 6 are free (if they will need a seat in the Feast Hall please let us know). The only real Reservation is a PAID Reservation. Please list both SCAdian and mundane names, address, and a telephone number or e-mail address so we may contact you if there questions. To sleep in a bed in the new cabin, the cost is $2 per night. Do include this on your reservation, as
there are limited beds, and your bedspace reservation will be confirmed. These are actual beds dormitory-style but there are no linens provided. Crash space in the main hall with your own bedding is as always free, and there is camping space available for those willing to set up tents.Directions: Find your best route to NYS Rt. 17 east of the I-81/Rt. 17 split; then make your way to Exit 76 Haskins Road/Foley Road. There will be signs directing you to Johnson Road and SCA signs. From the east, turn left at the top of the ramp, and take the next 2 lefts. From the
west (the direction most of you will take), turn right at the top of the ramp and then take your next left onto Johnson Road. The camp is less than a mile down Johnson Road on the right.

Seneschal’s Ramblings
Currently everything seems to be going smoothly in the winter months. I wanted to remind everyone that coming up next month is the elections. We have several currently open positions, such as Minister of Youth, Thrown Marshal, Fencing Marshal, Equestrian Marshal, and Chirugeon. Don’t forget, just because a office is currently taken by someone does not mean you can’t run against them! If you don’t feel that you know enough about the offices to make a choice, feel free to contact the current officer. Perhaps you may wish to volunteer to be their deputy. There is
no better way to learn something than to do it yourself.
We will be brewing our Sterlynge Vayle Ale this weekend so that we are ready for Axes and Ales. Come join us and help stir the pot! (Literally, not figuratively) or stop by and encourage the stir-ers!Don’t forget to volunteer often and early for Axes and Ales. Lady George is autocratting, and we all need to work together to make this the Axes and Ales that everyone has come to expect!
In Service to the Shire of Sterlynge Vayle, and the Kingdom of Aethelmearc,
-Eoghan Rurikson
**REMINDER**
The March business meeting is when ALL Offices except Exchequer are up for grabs! If you cannot attend the meeting, send a proxy vote &/or call the seneschal before the meeting! You must have a blue card to hold office, but you do not need a blue card to vote.

Brewer’s Guild Report
Eoghan brewed a Scotch Ale this past Sunday at our A&S meeting. This Scotch Ale was brewed for sharing at feast at Axes & Ales in our usual tradition.
We had a few more enthusiastic students this time, as the yeast infect… er, enthusiasm for brewing spreads through the shire. George has promised to bring the 5 kinds of mead again for a little yeast tasting education for the different characters of Mead.

Seneschal’s Ramblings
Sorry about the lack of Ramblings lately, unfortunately Mundane life decided to become....interesting.
The last few business meetings have been kind of slow, we voted to buy a sheet of steel and rivets to make some new helms for the Shire. Rumor has it we have about 8-10 new fighters showing up this spring, and we hope to keep them from getting bored. Also, we discussed demos. The campground that we did the demo at last year is hoping we will return this year, but we don't have a date yet. We also discussed Chenango Valley state park. If we plan it now, they will put us on the calendar and we can focus on advertising and getting word out about it. Anne
suggested doing a medieval day, out at the American Legion in Harpursville. They have an annual Civil War re-Enactor day, and it draws a fair crowd. Last year it even made front of the local section in the Press and Sun.
I would also like to take a moment and remind everyone that elections are coming up in March. We have several offices that are completly vacant, and have been for some time. We have no Minister of the Youth, several Marshallete positions open, and our Chirugeon has stepped down due to mundane concerns. The other offices are currently filled, but remember, competition is good for the soul! Ever wanted to try your hand at an office? Thought about being the Herald or the Chronicler? Now is a great time to talk to the current person filling the office and see if you wish to compete with them for it! Who knows, they may wish to step down, and you could be their hero, just for volunteering.
Ice Dragon is coming up in 2 months. This is a great time to finish up a project for entry into their Arts and Sciences competition. With 2 months to go, there is time to start a project and enter it!
Its a great opportunity to show off the skills of our Shire's wonderful artisans.
I suppose that is enough mindless ramblings for today..
In Service to the Shire of Sterlynge Vayle, and the Kingdom of Aethelmearc,
Eoghan Rurikson

Scribal Central
Greetings good people of Aethelmearc, particularly the scribes. Last weekend at the Baronial Investiture in the Debatable Lands I was in a discussion with a small group of scribes and they agreed that a nice thing to have would be a place online to easily view the work of other scribes. Since some scribes keep their portfolios or at least examples of their work online, if there was a central page people would go to that had links to these peoples' work then it would be a great way to get ideas or just to see what everyone else was doing. Ever think, "Wow, I wish I could get a closer look at that scroll that was given out at court?" As more scribes post their work this might be a place to go to fulfill that wish.
Since I have some extra time on my hands I ran the idea past the Sylvan Signet, who emphatically told me to run with it. So I would ask our good scribes: If you have any of your work posted online and would like a link to it included on this central web page please send the address off-list to my email account (isenwulf@isenwulf.net). Once I get a few links to peoples' work I'll build the page and post the address to it on this list. Hopefully it will be up within a week and as more scribes post their work we can add links to it on the page.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Ban on Sliders
My Lords and Ladies,
Effective immediately, the mechanical device known as a " slider ", used to guide/propel spears, is banned for use in SCA combat. I consider them to be a dumb, 20th Century mechanical cheat, not evidenced in history, that constitutes a safety risk.

Apology from the Chronicler
I am sorry for the lack of newsletter this past month, but it is difficult to produce a newsletter without a record of the most recent business meeting nor the listing of where A&S shall meet. As and excuse, I offer the following website for your perusal. http://elspeth.clandiarmat.com/ Congratulations, Eoghan and Anne on your newest addition- Elspeth Marie!
While I was not involved in the effort at all (gratefully), the newsletter content has been. Hopefully we will get back on track soon.
