There are other offices that can be filled.  Any office without a deputy can always use one.  Also we should have all the officer slots filled if at all possible.  Do you know a Doctor or EMT that you could enlist in the society?  We could really use a chirurgeon.  Several of you have mentioned an interest in archery and fencing.  Eventually, we would like to have an Archery Marshall and a Rapier Marshall, in addition to our Knight and Thrown Weapons marshals, and a Chancellor Minor, as children are the future of our society.  Keep you eyes and ears open.

Upcoming Events

Note' Bena (Note Well):  Not all SCAdian events are listed here.  Events from both Aethelmearc and the East are given with preference to those within the most reasonable driving distance of the denizens of our faire shire.  Additional details concerning many of the events listed outside of our Shire may be found in the Aestel or the Pikestaff.  If you do not have a copy, feel free to contact Lady George or Jakys for information.

Seneschal's Ramblings

First of all, I want to thank every one of you that came out and helped make Axes and Ales the rousing success that it was.  Everyone left with the phrase, "Can you do that again next year?" so we will try to make this an annual event.  I can't thank you any better than the Queen did in her note.  All of you had great ideas that contributed to this event, and we really lived up to the name of Sterlynge Vayle.

As for our next event, we are looking for a site to hold either Coronation [Editor's Note: This depends on whether or not Jarl Sir Yngvar the Dismal wins Crown or not, though we are sure he will, and upon whether or not our bid to host it is accepted] or an event to be called Bards and Bruises - featuring a Bardic college autocrated by Erwillian (Billy) and a heavy weapons tourney.  Coronation bids must be submitted by June 5 - So we need to prepare the bid before we know the winner of Crown Tourney if at all possible.  It would be nice to still have a small event at Camp Sertoma, perhaps in early September, in the interest of keeping our friendly relationship with the site, but I do not wish to strain our resources.

Congratulations are in order for those who received their AoAs at the event - Welcome Lord Jakys, Lady Keran, and Mad Lord Vlat!  Oh, and I got a keystone.  So SPOON!! to all of you!

For those who wish pre-reg forms for Pennsic, I have them at our house.  Stop by and pick them up.  Jakys and I will be camping with "The Shire of Barren Sands".

Queen Dorinda has decided to fight in the Pennsic war.  Lord Jakys, as her loyal Guard, will attempt to authorize and armor up in time to defend her.  I also will join her vanguard.  All from Sterlynge Vayle who would join us to defend the Queen are welcome to step forward for this honor.

A sad note:  The King of Ealdormere, Sir Osis, died on May 16 traveling home from an event.  I met King Osis, and my heart goes out to his Lady Caitlin, and their kingdom as they mourn his passing.  His dramatic flair and infectious humor are only a small part of him that will be missed.  Yet another War Throne will be vacant, but it is not yet known if Caitlin will reign on without her king.

Your in Service,

Lady George Anne

A Letter from Their Royal Majesties

To the people of Sterlynge Vayle do Cygnus and Dorinda, King and Queen of AEthelmearc send greetings.

We wish to thank each and every one of you for your hard work and generous hospitality at the Axes and Ales event.  We had a wonderful time, and are still amazed at the work that went into setting up the thrown weapons range, the list field and the court area.  The feast was wonderful, and we hope you will express our appreciation to the entire kitchen staff - especially those who were generous enough to come from outside your group to help.

We would also thank you for your very thoughtful gifts throughout the weekend.  Not only was the gift basket lovely and full of surprises, but we truly appreciate the reserved parking, the cabin, the food, the sun shade, and especially the toddler bed for Quinn. (Although he was having far too much fun to take a nap!)  These special touches turn long journeys into a joy, and we are grateful for your thoughtfulness.

We look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Cygnus, Dorinda, and Quinn

Chronicler's Notes and Subscription Notice

Remember to stop by the Shire's web site at http://www.servtech.com/~thegeorg/sca/index.html Lady George and I have taken a few pictures from the last slew of events we attended.  I promise we will make an effort to get these photos developed more quickly than we normally do and have both digital versions on the web page, and hard copy ones for a photo album, which our lovely Chatelaine Keran could use to tempt the newbies into joining.  This is also a good idea for us to be able to share the experiences of events which others of our shire may not have been able to attend.  We are still looking for more pictures, both .jpg files and hard copy.  If you have any doubles, please think about contributing them.

This newsletter belongs to all the gentles of Sterlynge Vayle.  Any and all submissions are welcome for publication.  You may submit reviews of events or society related materials, notes on period research you may be conducting, persona sketches, jokes, poetry, rants, or most anything related to the Shire or the society in general.

It would also be nice if any of our more creative types would be interested in drawing/writing a monthly cartoon or feature column.  This could be your chance to win the William Black fox Prize.  This is the Known World recognition for excellence in local newsletters!  I have received details of this competition from the Kingdom Chronicler, THL Roxane the Tempting, and if any of you are interested please contact me.

Subscriptions to the Dragon's Tongue are 12 mundane dollars per year.  Please make checks payable to "SCA Inc. Shire of Sterlynge Vayle" and forward to Jakys the Cheesemonger or Lady George.  E-mail subscriptions are free.

Ask Towanda (An SCAdvice Column)

Dear Towanda,

I am a fighter who wants to be King.  However, my spouse isn't all that keen on the SCA.  Sometimes I wonder if she even likes the fact that I fight.  She shudders when she sees the bruises I proudly display for her ministrations.  How can I show her that its good to be the Queen?   Or should I convince her to pick a friend that I can have as consort instead?

Sincerely,

Future Duke, if she'd let me.

[Playing "The Man Song".....]

This is too easy, Darling.  Too, too easy.  Tell her that you know she would much rather the bruises came from fighting than from another woman.  Trust me, she'll straighten up.  If not, hire an escort to play little geisha girl on the side.  When your woman is steaming in her own jealous juices, say "Well, I had to have SOMEONE cater to my fragile male ego for a mere 2 or 3 weekends a month.  Excuse me there's something in my eye!"  At this point, wipe away a tear, real or imagined.  It should all pan out.  Soon, you should be able to sport your lady at your side.

If all else fails, introduce the wife to one of the hot young fighter studs, and see how often she at least shows up to tournaments.

Wizened Lunatic,

Towanda

Fighting Report by Mad Lord Vlat

Unto the populace of thee Shire of Sterlynge Vayle, I send Greetings!

I just thought that I would say hello to all of our Gentles.  As most of you know, I have been hosting the Shire fighting practices at my home.  Attendance has been improving on the fighting side, but on the other hand, there has been almost no arts and Sciences types.  So I would just like to let everyone know that I am extending my PERSONAL invitation to attended.  I promise that the fighters will not harm you.  Also, feel free to bring your projects and such.

Also, we are trying to recruit new Gentles to the SCA and it would be nice to offer them more than steel and a stick.

Last but not least, I would like to thank our volunteers who gave their time to represent the Society and helped with the WSKG auction on Thursday, May 6th.

Axes and Ales (May 15, AS 34)

A review by the Autocrat

Since it seemed that the entire Shire was present, this may be a bit redundant, but in case any on this list missed it, I will say a few things about Axes and Ales.

First, foremost, last and best.... Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.  I was very nervous in my role as this was my first chance to autocrat an event.  I kept worrying that something hideous would go wrong.... nobody would come, the feast would poison the Queen, a meteor would strike the site,.... You get the idea.

At some past events, I worried not enough people would be available to help, and I was always bone tired.  This time, there was none of that.  We have a solid core of people in this shire who come to A&S meetings, business meetings, fighter practices, travel to events, and the like.  And to a person, each of you was there helping to make this event come off as a success.  I want to thank all of you for the hard work, time, patience, and effort you put in.

We could not have asked for better weather!  The weekend was beautiful beyond words.  The attendance for all three aspects of the competition was beyond my hopes.  Nearly two dozen thrown weapons folk competed in the tourney, a huge number of brewers, including the Kingdom's only three brewing Laurels, and the fighting event was attended by some very August personages, including Knights.

The feast was spectacular.  Each item in both removes was a delight, and I think that the populace left well fed, and well pleased.  My thanks again to Dame Aoife forever.

And Court..... What can I say about Court?  The generosity of Their Majesties flowed upon Sterlynge Vayle, and the Queen herself sent us a letter of thanks which you can read in this issue.  Many gentles came and commented to us on what a lovely time they had, what a good theme it was for an event, and expressed their hopes that we could do it again next year for a (hopefully) even larger field of competitors in each area.

I would like to join the others who have already done so in congratulating all of you who were recognized for all of your fine service to the Shire in Court.  To Lady Keran who has finally been given the AoA she so richly deserved for all of her long hard efforts in so many areas which so often go un-noticed.  To Mad 'Lord Vlat, who also received his AoA after a decade of service, and his teaching of our Shire's aspiring fighters.  To my beautiful Lady George Anne, who was welcomed into the Order of the Keystone for her many services to the Shire and Kingdom.  To Master Simon, who was given his Royal Construction Permit for the building of the war gate.  You all richly deserve these awards.  I hope you will all join us during the next season in noting those newer, hard working members of the Shire, and writing recommendations for them to receive their own awards.

Special congrats to our fighters Amy and Angus (now renamed "Wee Angus" for perpetuity by Jarl Sir Yngvar) for becoming authorized to fight in heavy weapons and accounting themselves well on the list.  Mad Lord Vlat has worked long and hard training our new fighters, and he should be proud.

Enough rambling from me.  I am weary and the hour grows late.  I just wish to say again... thank you to you all.

I remain, Yours in Service.

Lord Jakys the Cheesemonger.

Pomp and Circumstance: Herald's Report

VIVAT, VIVAT, VIVAT...

At their Court of 15 May, Anno Societatis XXXIV, Their Sylvan Majesties, Cygnus the Blissful and Dorinda Courtney, fourth King and Queen of AEthelmearc honored Sterlynge Vayle's populace with three Awards of Arms (AoA); created one of our own as a Companion of the Order of the Keystone; and granted a Special Royal Commission to yet another.

1.  Our Chatelaine, Keran Roslin in recognition of her many years of service to the Shire of Sterlynge Vayle, the Kingdom of AEthelmearc and the SCA as Chatelaine, Autocrat, Landocrat at Pennsic, and as a researcher into the history of Medieval Armenian names and naming traditions was granted her AoA and created the Lady Keran Roslin.

2.  Our Chronicler and Thrown Weapons Marshall, Jakys the Cheesemonger in recognition of his many services to the Shire of Sterlynge Vayle, as Chronicler, Autocrat and Thrown Weapons Marshal was granted his AoA and create The Lord Jakys the Cheesemonger.

3.  Mad Vlat Kohut, Knight Marshal of Sterlynge Vayle in recognition of his service as Knight Marshall, and his skill as a fighter and armorer was granted his AoA and created the Mad Lord Vlat Kohut.

4.  Our Seneschal, The Lady George-Anne of the Vayle , was created a Companion of the Order of the Keystone, in recognition of her service as Chronicler, Autocrat, A&S Coordinator and much more...

5.  Their Majesties at the same Court called Master Simon de Oakwood into their presence and accepted his proposed design of the Gatehouse of the AEthelmearc War Camp and granted him a Crown Commission to construct the Gatehouse fro the Glory of Aethelmearc, and the protection of her war camp and its inhabitants.

Axes and Ales went well, and except for the mangling of the spelling and/or pronunciation of the gentles names by your herald, to whom  I apologize, Court went well and was well attended.  I'll only reinforce what I've said in the past that a goal of this Herald is to coordinate the creation of more embellishments to raise the Heraldic presence at our events.  We'll to doing banners, for the next Feast Hall, and creating an ensign to fly on the unused flagpole at the entrance to the site.

Oyez, Oyez... When next you see them give the Ladies George Anne and Keran; the Lords Jakys and Vlat Vivats for their Honors at Court.

Yours in Service... Malcolm fitz William.

How to Keep a Shire Small and Poorly Functioning by Angus MacFergus (a.k.a.  "Wee Angus")

First:  Don't ever mix with members outside of your own area of interest.  If you're a fighter, don't you dare attend A&S.  If your interested in sewing, heaven forbid you watch those stick and board folk play.

Second:  Don't take the time to introduce yourself to new members.  Even though once you were a newbie, hey!  Now your not, so just pretend they're not there.

If you follow these two simple rules, every event is new and exciting, because since no one knows who's who, the pride in announcing "Hey! I'm from Sterlynge Vayle too!" will never fade.

Yours in Service

Angus MacFergus

Seneschal's Ramblings

We've certainly had a busy March!

Congratulations to Jakys the Cheesemonger, who has been selected as a member of the Queen's Guard, by Her Royal Majesty Dorinda at Coronation!  Jakys and I will be doing a lot of traveling while TRM are on the throne, which wouldn't be possible without the kind assistance of Debbie.  Thank you Debbie!  We truly appreciate it.  [Editor's Note:  Steve has also jumped in to help us with this, and we are very grateful.]

We also recently held a meeting with Lord Geoffrey of York.  Before you think I'm using a Royal We, let me tell you who was there:  Earl Sir Yngvar the Dismal and Countess Caryl came from Syracuse to help out, because he is the regional seneschal.  We also had <NAME REMOVED BY REQUEST>, Malcolm, Eisedrache, Alethea, Jakys and myself.  I think the meeting went very well, with Caryl doing most of the talking.

We did our best to show him that he should consider the shire as a resource, and that we are here to help him.  We also told him that funds should be channeled through the Shire and that we should receive 10% of the take, which he took very well.  Unfortunately, or fortunately, I have since learned from Baroness Caitlyn the Patient that this is not necessary.  While our coffers will miss the income, our exchequers are breathing a heady sigh of relief.  I also hope that this will help Geoffrey think of the Shire as a support, instead of a drain on his endeavor.  We still should receive a "thank you" cut of up to 50% if we are asked to help put these events on - but our assistance isn't mandatory.

What is mandatory is that the Shire is kept informed of SCA events within our borders, and  the seneschal or a deputy du jour should attend each event.  This person should be the one to pull sanction if any such action is ever required, and should only do such an extreme action with full knowledge of the autocrat - and preferably with their support.

I have told Geoffrey to invite the sire up to his land for work-days, so we may spend more time getting to know him, and help get the lands in order.  This dream of a campground to be shared with many groups is a wonderful idea, and I would like to see it succeed.  Your support is appreciated.

Meanwhile, planning for Axes and Ales is proceeding quite nicely.  More volunteers are always useful - so if you haven't volunteered yet, please do.  Events can be run effectively with just a few people, but it 's not much fun for those few.

Volunteer for a shift so somebody can go take a break and have some fun too.

Your in Service,

Lady George Anne

Arts & Sciences Report

Unto the good People of Sterlynge Vayle does Seamus MacFergus, Servant of this Sylvan Shire, send Faire Greetings!

It is my honor to proclaim that the Arts & Sciences flourish in our little corner of the Realm!  Highlights in the past few months have included some notable accomplishments.  Jakys the Cheesemonger & Lady George Anne have been stalwart champions of the weekly A&S meetings and deserve special accolades for their diligent efforts on behalf of our domain.  Besides arranging the next Shire event, they have been overseeing the brewing of the soon-to-be-famous Sterlynge Ale to be featured at Axes & Ales coming up May 14-16, 1999.  You'll Be there Of Course!

One of our newest members, Lady Alethea, was honored at the annual Festival of the Passing of the Ice Dragon.  She was among the small number of entrants to compete in five separate categories of the challenging Ice Dragon Pentathlon, and among the very few personally selected by their excellencies, the Baron and Baroness of the Rhydderich Hael, as worthy of special praise.  Congratulations Lady Alethea!

In other news, our own Erwilian the Bard is currently serving a commission to their Majesties as the first Sylvan Bard of the Kingdom of AEthelmearc, an honor he won in competition at Coppertree's Twelfth Night Celebration  this past season.  If you didn't have the pleasure of attending the event, check out the review in the February edition of the AEstel for the whole storey.  Erwilian will serve Their Majesties until he passes his title to the next Bardic champion at Aethelmearc War Practice.  For more info about the Bardic College and future competitions, as k Erwilian or contact Lady Gwendolyn the Graceful.

Our Reigning King and Queen, Cygnus and Dorinda, Long may They Prosper, recently commanded that Gates to the Realm be raised at the next Pennsic War!  The call for entries yielded a number of praiseworthy responses but the final design was awarded to Master Simon de Okewode of Sterlynge Vayle. Master Simon is known to many as the designer of Okewode Hall, located on Battle Road at Pennsic.  I have the honor of assisting Simon, and will bring my experience as a scenic artist to the project.  A number of other kingdom craftsmen have offered to help and we hope that you too will be inspired to join us in this lasting contribution to the Glory of Aethelmearc.

The endeavor shall be undertaken during the months of June and July, 1999.  Tentative community work dates are June 19th & July 17th, although we hope to start the project sometime in May.  Contributions of material and effort will be greatly welcomed and those who volunteer their service to building this glorious edifice will have the gratitude of the Crown and the admiration of the Kingdom.  You may contact either Master Simon or Seamus to find out more.

I am trying to get to Pennsic, but my mundane boss won't let me get more than a few days off at a time.  What do I do?

-Sad and Stuck at the Dead-End Desk Job

Dear Sad,

That IS sad!  Show your superiors who is boss!  Stage a floor-wide stand up protest.  Put on some Joe Cocker, preferably "You Can Leave Your Hat On."  Don't start gyrating until the CEO walks in.  Whip off your business casual to reveal an  Ogami bodice (okay, they're not period or kosher with PETA, but the only animal rights you want the CEO to be considering are your own) or full Elizabethan.  Have others around you start chanting "PENN-SIC....PENN-SIC....PENN-SIC....PENN-SIC!" and beating jungle drums.  Hey, they have those kind of things lying around the most upscale offices.  Hire a belly dancer to come in and someone like Lor Ras al Zib to provide some excruciatingly tasty something or other.  Start a conga line.  If you don't get the week off, at least you'll be fired.

Wizened Lunatic,

Towanda

Fighting Report

Lady Georg was unable to contact our Knight Marshal in time for a report for this newsletter (sorry!) so she is filling in with an update on fighting activities in our shire:

Alethea, Angus MacFergus and myself went to the last Myrkfaelinn muster and borrowed whatever armor we lacked.  Steve and I bravely attempted to authorize, and while neither of us succeeded, we did learn something more about our fighting, and how to improve.  All three of us enjoyed the melees, and proudly showed off our injuries that t night at A&S.

Mad Vlat is trying to arrange for guest marshals to come this Thursday, (April 29) to run authorization bouts again.  We have heard whispers of Yngvar, Kay, Hoj, and John the Pell.  But then, we hear whispers of local fighters like <NAME REMOVED BY REQUEST> planning to attend too, so who knows who will attend besides the usual crew?

Alethea has also brought back a video tape of Duchess Elina's tape on women fighters.  Both of us have copies of her book.  If you are interested in learning more about Duchess Elina's theories that have infected Alethea and myself with more enthusiasm about fighting, please contact either of us.  If enough interest is expressed, we can schedule a screening of the tape.

-Lady George Anne.

A Message from Aardwhin Minstrelsong

To the folk of Sterlynge Vayle, greetings.

I just read my copy of the AEstel, and I must apologize for misspelling the name of your illustrious shire in my poem about the first Sylvan Bard, Lord Erwilian.  I only hoe I spelled his name correctly. If you would be so kind, please pass a message to Lord Erwilian.  I spoke to him at Ice Dragon, telling that the poem about him would be in April's AEstel.  He is considering setting it to music.  Please tell him that in writing the poem my intention was that the first 8 lines that are printed in the AEstel would be the chorus.

My thanks for your Kindness.

Aardwhin Minstrelsong

Axes and Ales (May 15, AS 34)

An Update by the Autocrat

Well, we are getting closer than ever to the event.  Keep your fingers crossed and your hands busy.  While it appeared for a while as if His Royal Majesty would be unable to attend with the Queen due to mundane requirements, we are now told that both shall attend.  (Yeeeaaaaahhhh!!!!!!!!)

Our full length notice will appear in the next AEstel, due out shortly.

For those who have not yet heard, our call for help with a Feastocrat was noted and answered by Dame Aoife, one of our neighbors to the south, who is also a Laurel Chef with Many royal progresses under her belt.  She has been working with Lady Althea among other volunteers, to prepare for the feast.  Thanks again to the people who have volunteered to help in the kitchen that day, but we could still use one or two more, so don't be shy.  Details of the menu are mostly set, and if you want a peek ahead of time, contact me.

As was mentioned previously, we still need solid confirmations from those of you able to help with all aspects of the event, but particularly the site inspection/set up the weekend before, and the major set-up work on Friday afternoon evening of that weekend.  Please, please, please, stop by one of the remaining A&S meetings, or call us so that we can set up a roster and ensure that we have sufficient time and elbow grease to get this done smoothly.

We plan on moving forward with the Silent Auction at the events as an additional fund-raiser, so if any of you have projects, items, etc.  which you could donate, it would be  most appreciated.  This will very likely be a much smaller event than Crown Tourney was, but we would still like to show a profit for the Shire's Coffers for our future plans, as well as being able to make a respectable donation to the Crown.

A brief reminder of the format:

The event will be in two parts.  Indoors (in the feast hall) we shall hold a brewing Collegium where brewers shall be invited to attend from across the Kingdom, bringing their best beers, ales, meads and wines for tasting and  judging for prizes.  We are also sending out request for master brewers to come forward and teach brewing classes.  So far we have two, and an Æthelmearc Brewers' Guild meeting is also planned.

Outside on the main list, there shall be a thrown weapons tourney.  I have already enlisted the aide of some of the most experienced thrown weapons folks from Heronter to assist with deputy marshals, extra targets, and competition ideas.  Invitations are being sent to each unit of Æthelmearc to muster their best throwers for this tourney, where, with any luck, Their Royal Majesties shall present the awards at court.

Unfortunately, the full Company of St. Michael's will not make an appearance, but <NAME REMOVED BY REQUEST> and some of the other fighters are planning a heavy weapons challenge fro the day.  As this event is right before Crown Tourney, it should provide an excellent setting for last minute practice for those seeking the throne

Everyone has been just great, being active in the shire and showing your support over the last year.  I hope that we can once again count on even more of you to participate with yet another event which all of AEthelmearc will fondly remember.  We need all of you to make this event all it can be.

In Service.

Lord Jakys the Cheesemonger.

Pomp and Circumstance: Herald's Report

Greetings Good Gentles of Sterlynge Vayle:

The long winter and the slumber of your Herald is coming to an end.  We have processed three submissions for personal devices recently, and three submissions for society names.  While this is a long process with several months for reviews to go through Silver Buckle and Laurel Queen of Arms, I'm confident all will be well.

This brings me to the next item... I've been unable to unearth any old records of devices, arms, etc. granted to shire residents in the past... if you have any, know where any are... I would appreciate the information.

If anyone needs help in  creating a device or assistance in researching a name, I stand ready to assist you as your Book Herald.  My telephone, e-mail and address are listed with the other shire officers at the front of each issue.

Enough of the Book, now for the Pomp and Pageantry associated with the SCA.  Coming up soon - three weeks when I'm writing this - is "Axes and Ales", Sterlynge Vayle's Spring event, and a Royal Progress with a visit from Her Royal Majesty, Dorinda. [Editor's Note:  The King will also be attending, we are now informed]

Such an auspicious event demands that we put our best foot forward, and I welcome your assistance in all of the many Heraldic efforts in complementing the excellent plans of Jakys and his staff in presenting this event.

We need vocal heralds to cry the site, and make the announcements and carry  the information to the assembled gentles.  If you have a good strong voice; with good projection; and are not shy about standing in a crowd and crying out, give me a call or drop me an e-mail - we need your help.  If you can't commit until the day of the event, find me and we will give you an assignment then.

Related to Pomp and Pageantry, I am looking for Trumpeters and Drummers [with instruments please - both the Shire and I have none] interested in forming a troupe of Heraldic Musicians for Sterlynge Vayle.  The Troupe's duties will include pealing fanfares, doing drum rolls, and while I've leather lungs; trumpets and drums work better at getting people's attention, and the voice needs a rest occasionally.  Again, if you're interested, drop me a line or see me at "Axes and Ales."

Future projects with more information to come include Banner Painting, Device Designs and Heraldic History - Do you know a "Pard"?

In Service to the People and Officers of the Shire of Sterlynge Vayle,

Malcolm fitz William. (Pending)

A Review of Blackstone Raid by Lady George Anne

If there was an event worth driving across the length of AEthelmearc, Blackstone Raid is it.  There were as many merchants here as Ice Dragon, and more things to do besides, and the benefit of a larger site where more people don't feel terribly crowded or noisy.  Set at Camp Virgil Tate, just north of Charleston, West Virginia, the selection of activities were varied enough to please anyone.  There was rattan fighting, fencing, thrown weapons, a few classes, Bardic activities, and an active Curia.

The hardest part of the event was the 10 hour drive.  Ick.

The rattan fighting was very interesting because of the different scenarios planned for the melee combats.   They arranged plastic tarps in such a way as to form a curved tunnel, and held a "mine melee".  There was also an unbelted single elimination tourney in addition to all of the other scenarios, so everyone got to fight their fill.

Thrown weapons were aimed at a card placed in the middle of the target.  Jakys the Cheesemonger was the first one to slice the card neatly in half, even if he didn't win.  Congrats Jakys, for doing our shire (and me) proud.

Myrkfaelinn Music/Dance Collegium

A Review: by Jakys

This past weekend on April 24, Lady George, Lady Althea, Lord <NAME REMOVED BY REQUEST>, Master Symeon, Lord  Erwillian with his apprentice, and myself, had the pleasure of attending the Music and Dance Collegium at the Dominion of Myrkfaelinn.  While three of us were a smidgen late arriving, (as we were traveling with "she who perpetually runs on West Kingdom SCAdian Time") a good time was had by all.

I was standing Queen's Guard, and Georg and Althea were retaining, so we had quite the tour of the event, and it was fantastic!  We were able to attend a class in playing of the recorder, as well as observing classes in English Country Dancing, which were put to good use by many gentles at the ball later that night.

Our good craftsmen had their wares on display for all, and Lord Erwillian continued his musical services to the Queen, playing a number of fine tunes throughout the day and during the feast.  Many other musicians from across the Kingdom also attended and entertained us wonderfully.

During the day, there was fighter practice held outside, where if finally go the opportunity to see Lord <NAME REMOVED BY REQUEST> fight away from our shire.  He accounted himself well, managing to defeat one of the other combatants in a practice round.  We won't discuss how well he fared against Yngvar and the King.

The feast was magnificent , with three removes and lots of wonderful things to taste.  (I was goaded into finally trying Armored Turnips, and found them to be quite good.)  But certainly one of the highpoints of feast, aside from the marshmallow catapult the King attacked the crowd with, was when "Lady Althea of the Ever Amusing Foibles" determined that her that her time serving High Table would be an excellent opportunity to conduct experiments in new types of hair styling.  At some point during the first two removes, while leaning across teh table to serve TRM, Althea came too close to the candles and set her lovely, long tresses afire!  Several good gentles immediately rushed to her aide, and she came away claiming that "nothing was damaged but her vanity."  Sadly, she shall very likely have shorter hair next time you see her, but we trust that shall not impact her well known beauty overly much.

The Humor to be found in the ashes of this near tragedy was certainly punctuated when Master Symeon looked up form carving his portion of roast beast, sniffed teh air, and said, "Do you smell hair burning?"

All in all, we spent nearly 12 hours there, and it was wonderful.  If any of you have the opportunity to make this event next year, its not very far away, and well worth the trip.

Seneschal's Ramblings

Concerning going Barony.

A few folks have asked me what we need to do before we consider going Barony.

First of all, we need to continue fostering our group unity, and have everyone working together.  We cannot be a strong shire or barony without every individual's support and volunteerism.  Our current level is a fantastic improvement over last year, but we need to go even further, and focus on our group's glory.

We need to fill all of the officer posts, and ideally have deputies to assist  these officers.  Our officers need to consistently file reports.  In the past, we have had difficulties with that, and rarely held business meetings.  I plan to have regular business meetings, and feel strongly that this will help.  Please come to business meetings and kvetch or

A Barony ideally should have most things that the Society can offer.  We have added regular fighter practice this year.  I would also enjoy having monthly dance practice, calligraphy & illumination, brewing meetings, and sewing gatherings.  It would also be lovely to have a list of contacts for who is willing to share their knowledge in what.  Not all Baronies offer all of this.  I believe our shire already has these resources, but we are not using them to our fullest potential.

We will also need a codified Policy.   While I could write this on my own and present it at the next business meeting, I would prefer to share this responsibility and gather input of others.  Anyone who would like to help, should contact me.

According to Corpora, we are required to have 25 Active Blue Cards within our borders.  While we easily have double that number interested in the Society, most are not active.  So we should hold more demos to draw more interested folks into our shire.

We should also host more events and continue to keep the kingdom's attention.  Perhaps we should start planning other events.  Please bring your ideas forward!  It can't happen if you don't tell anyone your idea.

As early as next year, we can request that the officer in charge of status changes comes to Sterlynge Vayle to guide us further an d make sure we are prepared.  Then we can formally request the Kingdom Seneschal for an official polling to decide the issue.  Everyone with a current Blue Card will have one vote, and the tally would determine our fate.  On that polling, or on a subsequent one, we can elect a Baron or Baroness

Your in Service,

Lady George Anne

Arts & Sciences Report

(New Date / Time / Place for A&S Meetings!)

Unfortunately, our new A&S officer is currently stuck in the middle of nowhere, so we shall slog along with an ad hoc a&S report for this month as best we can.  The last few A&S meetings have been very well attended.  Thank you all for your participation and ideas.

There are several newsworthy items in this area of Shire Activity.  At least four people are currently sharpening their illumination and calligraphy skills and are busily making scrolls to be used at Axes & Ales, both as awards for the competitions there, and hopefully some more to be gifts to Their Majesties, who are always in need of such.

On a Saturday in the very near future, (exact weekend still in debate) there will be an afternoon of brewing at the house of Lady Georg and Jakys.  Since a couple of you asked, we will be demonstrating how to brew a batch of beer or ale, and working on the first recipe for Sterlynge Ale! (yes, I know, it's very corny.)  We plan to enter this at our event, and also to begin perfecting the recipe for Pennsic.  Feel free to come by and learn  how to join our brewing guild.  Lady Georg can also assist you with where/how/cost etc. of getting your own brewing equipment for your home.

Also very exciting is an offer from Billy Bardo to host an afternoon of silversmithing.  Billy is one of the shire's fine craftsmen who works with precious metals.  His plan is to create a pair of silver necklaces as a gift for their Majesties when they visit.  All are welcome to come and watch and learn about the art of silversmithing, and perchance to help with some of the fining, filing, and finishing of the pieces.

If you have any other A&S projects of your own which you would wish to be highlighted in the newsletter, or request for such, please forward the  to Jakys the Cheesemonger

Ask Towanda (An SCAdvice Column)

Dear Towanda,

I am allergic to roses, which are taken everywhere within the society as romantic tribute to the bygone age.  At one feast I am glad I did not attend, the rosewater in the fingerbowls was enough to induce asthma in several maidens.  I do not wish to avoid events, but what can I do?

Silly Wabbit,

Oh my LORD, you are such a NERD!  Get OVER it already!  Pop some Benadryl.  It might interact with the mead that sexy Delftwood guy insists on pouring into your goblet as he stares adoringly at you.  I would recommend you abstain.  From the mead,  that is.  What fun is that?  Well, let me tell you a trick that will REALLY knock 'em dead.  Your sleepy antihistamine-affected eyes will only make him think you've got bedroom eyes.  When they pass the bowl of rosewater, pour it down your throat and the front of your bodice.  Gargle.  Raise and wiggle your eyebrows suggestively.  You will give HIM an asthma attack.

Wizened Lunatic,

Towanda

The Last Shire Business Meeting (3/7/99)

The previous Shire business meeting was held on 3/7/99, at Lady Georg's house.  Attendance was fabulous, with more people than we had seats for, several of the officers present and two more newbies who are showing a definite interest in joining our merry band! (Special thanks to <NAME REMOVED BY REQUEST> Daffyd for luring in the new people.  Keep it up!)

Several items were discussed.  A vote was taken on spending a small bit of Shire funds (yes, we actually have some money now!) to allow our lovely Chatelaine, Keran, to begin purchasing some feast gear for newbies to use when they show up at our events.  This, along with the loaner garb already available, should make new members feel even more welcome, and enhance their enjoyment of their first events.

Discussions were also held on the purchase of rattan for our fighters, but this motion was tabled for the time being while orders are taken, and interest is gauged.

More discussion was held on the specifics for Axes and Ales this spring.  It now looks as if we will have a combination of a few folks acting in together in the capacity of Chef, and we'd like to thank those who have stepped forward and volunteered.  More volunteers are still needed for the event, particularly for the weekend before and Friday night set up.  Please contact Jakys if you are at all able to help with the massive effort required to pull this off with the same success we enjoyed at Crown Tourney last fall.

Fighter Practice

The fighter practices continue.  Mad Vlat is busy with instructions in the martial arts and the acquisition and construction of armor and other gear.  The big news?  One of our new fighters GOT AUTHORIZED!!!  Please join us in congratulating Alethea (Allis Hewett) who was authorized at Regional Muster at Myrkfaelinn at the end of Feb.  Our first new authorized female fighter!!  She who would ALSO be Queen!

The practices are still being held on Saturdays in Endicott around 11 AM under the expert tutelage of Mad Vlat, m.k.a. Tim Kohout.  To find out about the schedule and how to get involved, contact him at home.  Please call him the day before to make sure that he is in fact having a practice.

Axes and Ales (May 15, 1999) An update by the Autocrat

Not too much has changed since the last report.  We still look forward to Their Majesties attending, and the Kingdom Thrown Weapons Captain himself has announced that he will be coming to participate! (Yeah!!!)  The Head of the Æthelmearc Brewer's Guild will also attend, and the first Guild-wide meeting will be held at our event.

Our teaser notice has already appeared in the Æstel, and a full length version will be sent in shortly for the next issue.

We have now compiled a list of people who have expressed an interest in being the chef (chefs) for the event, and they will be contacted shortly.  Lots of good suggestions have been received for the feast.  Thanks to all, and keep them coming.

As was mentioned in other parts of the letter, we still need solid confirmations from those of you able to help with all aspects of the event, but particularly the site inspection/set up the weekend before, and the major set-up work on Friday afternoon evening of that weekend.

We are still seeking ideas for other fund raising concepts.  One which has been proposed is a silent auction, so if any of our artisans would be willing to produce and donate something nice for that, it would be most appreciated.  The reason for this drive is that we have decided, after some discussion, to donate a portion of the proceeds to the Crown.  This is in thanks for the kindness shown to several of our members in the past by Their Highnesses and the people of the Shire of Heronter, as well as in thanks for Their attendance at our event which always swells attendance, an din celebration of our looking forward t o a productive and happy relationship with Their Highnesses during their coming Reign.

Your response was great during Fall Crown, and I hope that we can once again count on even more of you to participate with your work, your ideas, and your contributions to make this yet another event which all of Æthelmearc will fondly remember.  We need all of you to make this event all it can be..

In Service,

Lord Jakys the Cheesemonger.

I have to say that 7 Deadlies was absolutely dicaprilicious.  Not only were their swarms of men flocking to me like little golden retriever puppies, hypnotized by my too-tight bodice (which is what most people do, because I *am* the Towanda), but the food was INCREDIBLE!  I had one bite of the cheesecake.  Promptly after savoring this stolen mouthful of heaven, I declared that I would bear the children of the maker.  Luckily for me, it was made by Ruadh of Delftwood, who is eternally humble (and completely capable of bearing her own children).  Then I went back and had two big old slices of heaven.  I had the luck of dining with several Merkies, including Lust and Gluttony, my two favorite sins (definition of Merkie one who can't possibly be friendly enough)!  I was so happy to be there I set about on a task of writing valentines to everybody.  Including the servers.  My dinner mates joined me.

All I can say about the handfasting of Lady Portia and Laird Keyard was that I cried.  And cried.  And cried.  And I would recommend Portia to anyone as a creator of sumptuous garb that looks good enough to eat.

I met a few wonderful gentles that event that I had always heard about but had never met, including Lyev Davidovitch (in Russian: "I bear flowers and stuff"), <NAME REMOVED BY REQUEST> (motto "Yeah, well I bear flowers too, and my garb is shiny!"), and Malcolm (motto: "You too can live in Jersey and dance like this!")  It was also fantastic to see my mom-away-from-mom (MAFM) Bea, who hid me from prying eyes when I, in my perfect femininity, bawled until snot streamed down my delicate face.  I also saw Fiuonula, Laura and Artemis for the first time in tow or three Pennsics and the ever-charming Justin.  I saw the crew of Northern Outpost (or whatever members could bear the scorching above-zero heat of the south).  And no local event would b e complete without the clicking of spurs and legends of a certain member of royalty whose voice is reputed to be heaven-sent.  If you don't know who I mean, you don't deserved to know.  Still haven't had the chance to meet the king or queen, but with my luck, I'll  step on Her Highness's gown, she'll fall down the stairs, a pie will come out of nowhere and hit her in the face and she will suddenly feel compelled to sin "In  the Navy" by the Village People.  Then I'll make a crass joke before  realizing who she is.  In which case my  tine heinie will probably be given the royal boot.

Well, that about sums up my experience.  I hope everybody who went had as much fun.

Text of  A Letter to Drachenwald

(Words by Lady Brynna of Aelfstanbury, Tune – My Bonny Lies over the Ocean)

My Lord We Have Great News To Tell You

Too Wonderful Simply To Write

While You’ve Been Away At The Crusades

Your Lady’s Been Learning to Fight

Oh Boy, Oh Boy, She’s Learning to Handle a Sword, A Sword

Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh What a Surprise for Her Lord

It’s True She’s a Delicate Creature

A Vision Of Sweetness and Light

We Know That It’s Hard to Believe, But

Your Lady’s Been Learning To Fight

Oh Boy, Oh Boy, She’s Learning to Handle a Sword, A Sword

Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh What a Surprise for Her Lord

With A Sword of Rattan Wrapped in Duct Tape

In Armor And Helmet So Bright

You’d Better Start Practicing Quickly

Your Lady Is Learning To Fight

Oh Boy, Oh Boy, She’s Learning to Handle a Sword, A Sword

Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh What a Surprise for Her Lord

So Polish Up Weapons And Armor

And Hone Up Your Skills To Their Height

And Say A Few Prayers While Your At IT

Your Lady Has Learned How to Fight

Oh Boy, Oh Boy, She’s Learning to Handle a Sword, A Sword

Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh What a Surprise for Her Lord

So This Puts an End To Carousing.

No More You’ll Go Wenching All Night

We’re Sorry For The Inconvenience

But We’ve Taught Your Lady To Fight

Oh Boy, Oh Boy, She’s Learning to Handle a Sword, A Sword

Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh What a Surprise for Her Lord

We Know That You May Not Believe It

She Once Was So Timid and Meek

But You’d Better Get Used To It Quickly

Cause She Won Crown Tourney Last Week

Oh Boy, Oh Boy, She’s Learning to Handle a Sword, A Sword

Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh What a Surprise for Her Lord

So We Thought We’d Send You A Letter

And Spare You A Terrible Scene

Of Returning At Last To Your Homeland

To Find Out That You Are The Queen

Oh Boy, Oh Boy, She’s Learning to Handle a Sword, A Sword

Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh What a Surprise for Her Lord

Awards and How to Write a Letter of Recommendation by Rosalinde

(Used with permission, from a lady on the Eastern Mailing List, and reflects the Eastern Biases - but is equally valid for our beloved AEthelmearc)

Awards are given as a means of recognition for a job well done.  Many of our awards are not technically "awards" -- they actually induct the recipient into an Order.  Regardless, the process of writing a letter of recommendation is the same.

WHO CAN WRITE A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION?

Anyone.  That's right, anyone.  Most importantly, YOU SHOULD>  You don't need to know the King and Queen.  You don't need to be a member of any Order to recommend someone for it.  You just need to know who you believe should receive an award, and why.

WHY SHOULD YOU WRITE ONE?

The King and Queen can't possibly know everyone, what they do, and how well they do it.  They need the input of the populace to give them that information.  If you believe that someone deserves an award, it is your responsibility to convey that message to the King and Queen.  They are not mind readers.

HOW DO YOU WRITE ONE?

Its easy.  Figure out which award you believe someone deserves, and why.  Then write it down, and send it off.  Remember the "who, what, where, when and why," and your letter will be fine.  The easiest way may be to use the sample letter as a guideline.

WHEN DO YOU WRITE ONE?

For the polling orders, "when" is almost as important as "how."  Each reign sends out two pollings per reign.  This process starts when they are crowned Prince and Princess, *not* when they are crowned King and Queen.  The first polling is sent out before their coronation, and the second, shortly thereafter.

A SAMPLE LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION:

Unto Their Royal Highness, Timothy and Gabrielle, greetings!

I would like to recommend Robin Hood for an Award of Arms.  (get to the point - "who" and "what")

Robin has been a great asset to our shire.   He has cooked five feasts for our shire events, and always stayed late to clean up.  This weekend, he ran his first event without any problems, and even made a small profit.  He is also a great archer, and offers suggestions, or volunteers to make your shire better.   He is teaching this skill to some of the other remembers.  (This is the "why" - be specific, not "he does good work."

If you decide to make this award, Robin will be at the Northern Region War camp in July. ("where" and "when")

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sign It!

NOTES:

1.  As fun as it may be, now is not the time to practice your calligraphy, or play with a fancy font.  The Royalty need to be able to read your letter easily.  Make it clear and neat, business-like.

2.  Put each recommendation on a separate piece of paper.  You don't know how they file things, and it makes it easier if each recommendation is separate.

Now that wasn't hard, was it?  So write - and don't forget to mail it!

YE SERLYNGE VAYLE RECORDER

November 8, A.S. XVIII

by M. Alevskar

And now a word from your Seneschal...

Again in this newsletter, and in the two previous newsletters, I wish to remind you about the matter of national membership.  Please get me your proof before you send your money.  If you have already sent it in, follow - the procedure outlined in the first newsletter, or, if your check has been returned, make a copy and give it to me as soon as possible.

Next, again in this newsletter, as initiated in the last newsletter, I wish to remind you that all meetings are now being run by Frederick's Rules of Order:  All business is to be brought up to me before meetings, I will bring it up in the in the meeting when I deem it proper, and I would appreciate it if people would listen (that is considered polite even if you are not interested in the current topic of conversation!)  Please be courteous when others are speaking (especially when we are making introductions - I think that new members are sometimes getting confused by other talk during introductions.)  I will allot time at the end of normal business for all other information and announcements not brought to me before the meeting.  (Please let people with SCA - Related announcements go first.)

Please bring any and all problems and grievances to me.  All shire business goes through the seneschal; his OK (this is period? Ed) is required on everything involving the shire.

New Business:  As you all know, we are soliciting ideas for the shire's device.  I am sure you realize that if we do not get an idea from you, we cannot consider it.  If any of you have any ideas at all, please submit them to me or to our herald. (Please make all submissions legible, both drawings and writing, and remember that the intent of the device is to represent the shire for all time to come.)  After we have all submissions and suggestions, we (the whole shire) will decide on a device.  Start thinking of ideas now (if not yesterday - ed.)  Please try to make your submissions representative of our group.

                            -Fredrick MacGregor

Who are the Officers and what do they do?

Seneschal

The head bureaucrat, basically the chairman of the board (bored? - ed.) of any group.  The seneschal is there to listen to others and is the person from whom all authority is delegated. (Hmmm... - ed.)

Herald

The person responsible for the heraldry.  This person is also responsible for submitting the device and name of the group to be approved.  Any other submissions of heraldry also go through this person.  (She also makes pins. - Ed.)

Marshall

This is the person in charge of combat.  He should be qualified as a fighter.  He is also in charge of safety in the lists.  Knowledge of armour standards and some first aid is a MUST!  Knowledge of armour making is a nice bonus.

Exchequer

This person is in charge of the funds.

Chronicler

This person produces your local newsletter (That's me! - ed.)

Mistress/Master of Arts

The person in charge of nurturing the arts in your group.

Mistress/Master of Science

The person in charge of nurturing the sciences in your group.

Chirurgeon

The 'medical' person.  You must have at least Red Cross first-aid training to be a chirurgeon.  The chirurgeon is the first person to minister to tourney-related injuries.  All groups should try hard to have a qualified chirurgeon other than the marshall.

Gold Key

The person responsible for collecting garb and lending it to others.

Mistress/Master of the Lists

The person responsible for providing and collecting waivers at an event.  They are also responsible for getting authorization cards signed and sent to the Kingdom M. of Lists.  The major function of the List Office is to, in an orderly fashion, set up "who fights who" next in a tourney.

The seneschal generally does the work of any office that is vacant.

From the Mistress of Arts:

As we all know, the dancing demo for Dec 2,3 has been cancelled.  However, we have arranged to set up an information table in the Union from 11-2 pm on Wednesday. (thats tomorrow, folks!)  We need people in garb to man (or woman? - ed.) the booth.  We have a very important new member in our shire.  He is a court baron and a belted knight: Baron Sir Garanhir of Ness.  I trust that you will render him and his lady the honour due them.  We will have an Arts Tea Saturday at 7 pm at my place.  If you need directions, see me.  Bring munchies and have dinner in you.

The kingdom Arts Pentathlon is in Concordia this coming weekend.

From Your Chronicler:

I am pleased to report that our neighbours of Ladies' Keep (Wells College) had a quite successful first event this weekend, at which Serlynge Vayle was represented by our Seneschal, M.O.A., and myself.  The event featured an archery competition, in which a notable Myrkfaelinite shot himself in the forehead with great skill, and our Seneschal was observed stealing souls by means of foul sorcerous devices.  (He will display his captives soon, no doubt.)

There was a human chess game, in which your humble (?) chronicler took the part of the black king.  (The powers of darkness were victorious, I am happy to report.)  There was fighting (blindfolded with pillows) in which Serlynge Vayle distinguished itself.  The feast was excellent, the main course being cardamom chicken with lemon rice, and dancing followed.  The delegation from Myrkfaelin made the formal cession of the territory of Ladies' Keep to the new shire.  There was fine musical entertainment at the feast, also.  For information on the post-revel contact your Seneschal.

To the members of the Shire:        On the Pavan.

To quote Thoinot Arbeaus' Orahesography, "The pavan is a grave and solemn dance in which the man may wear his sword and cape, while the lady is dressed in a long gown waling decorously with studied gravity."

That illustrious dance - The March of the Isles

This dance has a semi-intricate beginning step having 5 positions.  Part I

                                                                    L                    R

1st   L        2nd   \R        3rd -> R        4th   /R        5th    L/     This moves to the righ,

           R               L               L                                                Then back to the left -

                                                                                                Starting on rgt ft back.

To Clarify:  The dance begins with the left foot pointed.  Music begins and the left steps back behind the right foot.  The right foot moves right.  The left crosses in front of the right and the right foot points.  To go back, the right foot steps back.  Do the same steps but with right reversed foot pattern.  This pattern is repeated so that it takes the first 16 beats of the song.  This is very quick.

Part II

(Do the step to the right then repeat to the left.  Now you begin moving up and down the hall.

/ \  X  Musical Beat

Lords and Ladies left in left.  The Lord takes eight steps up the hall to the beat while the Lady takes 4 turns in to her lord.----> Next the lords and ladies step out, then in, and switch sides. Now begin the dance from this end of the hall.

This is one sequence of the dance.  It may be repeated as many times as people are willing to dance it.  This dance is executed on a 4/4 beat and is fast and spirited.

Normally there will be an odd number of couples going one way down the hall, and an even number of couples going the other way alternating with the other couples.  This gives a fantastic effect in a large hall, one couple going up the hall while the other is coming down.

Brante De L'<UNREADABLE>  (Toast the Dutchess)

Toast the Dutchess is based on a 4/4 meter.  This means that each measure contains 4 beats, but the value of each note is divided by two.  Each measure now has two beats instead of four.

    This dance has two parts.

I) The dance begins with Lord alternating with Lady.  When the music begins, everyone takes two steps to teh left (left together, left together), then everyone takes two steps to the right (right together, right together).  This is repeated once

Musical Beat 1 2 3 4 | 1 2 3 4
step left step left step right step right   step left step left step right step right
Step number 1 2 3 4 | 1 2 3 4

II) Part II consists of 5 single steps to the left through musical beats 1,2,3,4

1. On musical beat 2, ladies step in front of their lord (step 6)

On musical beat 3 - ladies kick left then right in ONE beat.

Beat 4 Lords lift lady over to their left.

By beat 1, thou shalt be prepared to begin again.

Musical Beat 1 2 3 4 | 1 2 3 4
single steps left | ladies step in front of lord
Step number 1 2 3 4 | 5 6

Greetings all Gentles from your illustrious Seneschal,

As most of you know, I be named Frederick MacGregor (that be Frederick, nae Fred!)  I am the head of our (my) (?! - editor) shire in all matters, Society and mundane (Hmmm... - editor)  At this time, with the publication of our first newsletter, I have happy news; since our inception as an incipient shire we are now ONE MONTH OLD!!!  This milestone brings us to the matter of becoming an official shire in the eyes of the S>C>A>, also known as National Membership.  People, please inform me if you have sent in your twenty tygers ($$$ - editor) for national membership or if you will be doing so in the near future.

Here is the process for our records:  if you have not yet sent in your tygers, fill out a membership form, fill out your check, and make a legible magical scribing (photocopy - editor) before mailing your money, and give me the copy as soon as possible.  If you have already sent in your tygers without making me a copy, follow these steps:  make a fake check, fill out a fake membership form, make a magical scribing and destroy teh check so you can balance your books.  Finally if for any reason you need to contact me, it is possible (only difficult.)  The only hours that in calling you may reach me are in the evenings, but my answering service is usually effective at giving me my messages.  Don't burden them

                                                                                                                            your Seneschal,

From the Mistress of Arts:

I have received my warrant!  There are many things we can do in the arts.  There is dancing, music, garb work, calligraphy (I know, I know - editor), and much, much more.  I would like to form some guilds, shcu as a musicians guild.  (I need at least 5 musicians for this.)  We have a dancing demo on Dec 2,3 with the Madrigal Dinner.  Do we want more demos?  Your overwrought mistress is autocrating our first event (daft, isn't she? (No comment - editor))  There will be no garb workshops immediately preceding the event.  We have had an Arts Tea, and we will have more.  (Dates to be determinied.)
